Efforts to restore the wild Atlantic salmon to rivers flowing into Lake Ontario have been galvanized since 2006 by the support of Banrock Station Wines and the LCBO, joining the OFAH and others. In early 1800s salmon were plentiful - but were gone before 1900 due to dams, pollution, overfishing, etc. With other salmon species now introduced, it will be a tough job to re-establish the Atlantic salmon - but it is possible.

On Saturday, June 9, groups and individuals concerned about the future survival of native alewives (gaspereau) on the St. Croix River will symbolically escort this historically and ecologically important fish up the river.
