Jaewoo Kim - Population consequences of territoriality and the chronic effects of predation hazard in wild juvenile Atlantic salmon
Year: 2007
The study will provide an understanding of how population density and predation risk regulate wild populations. The findings will have immediate application for conservation and restoration, especially for the Miramichi River.

Matthew Morris - Comparison between and impact of compensatory growth in farmed, wild, and farm/wild hybrid Atlantic salmon

The project will highlight the potential consequences (if any) that the successful spawning of escaped farmed salmon may have on wild salmon populations, as well as contribute to an overall understanding of phenotypic plasticity and the ability of organisms to cope with fluctuating environments.

Dylan Fraser - Multi-generational hybridization and potential for outbreeding depression between farmed and wild Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar

This project will evaluate the potential for outbreeding depression between escaped farmed and wild salmon in North American, over both multiple generations and populations.

Cindy Breau - Behaviour at high water temperatures: can physiology explain movement of juvenile Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) to cool water?
Year: 2006

Movement of tagged salmon showed that during years with high temperatures, a net movement into the Catamaran Brook occurred. Salmon presumably re-established territory into the brook. Summer 2006, juvenile salmon will be tagged and location of territory and territorial behaviour compared to residents will be studied.

Aimee Lee Houde - Ecological interactions between juveniles of multi-generational crosses of farmed and wild Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L: relevance for conservation?

This project will evaluate the ecological interactions between multi-generational crosses of farmed and wild juvenile Atlantic salmon from North America. Specifically, the project will be evaluating competitive dominance, predation susceptibility, and performance in semi-natural environments with a focus on their possible effects on the viability of the wild population.

Laura Weir - Modes of competition and fertilization success among male Atlantic salmon
Year: 2005
Provide new information regarding male parr behaviour during spawning and baseline data against which to compare published results regarding behaviour and fertilization success of males of farmed origin and the potential contribution from mature male parr in natural populations with different parr densities.

Karen Gormley - Effects of land use practices on salmonid populations
Year: 2002

The aim of this project is to determine the effects of surrounding land use patterns on the salmonid populations (Atlantic salmon, brook trout and rainbow trout) on Prince Edward Island by sampling fish through electrofishing and performing stable isotope analysis.

Elizabeth Linton - Effects of short-term exposure to pulp and paper mill effluent to Atlantic salmon migrating up the Exploits River, Newfoundland
Year: 2002

The proposed study will examine the preference-avoidance behaviour of Atlantic salmon as they migrate through a river contaminated with pulp mill effluent. In addition to evaluating the duration and magnitude of their exposure to pulp mill effluent in the wild, the stress-response of salmon after short-term exposure to effluent will be evaluated using performance and fitness indices, including cardiac and swimming performances, blood chemistry and MFO activity.

Michelle Monette - Effects of short-term, sub-lethal acidlaluminum exposure on seawater tolerance and endocrinology of Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar, smolts
Year: 2002

The sensitivities of freshwater ionoregulatory ability and seawater tolerance of Atlantic salmon smolts to acid/aluminum (Al) exposure will be examined by assigning fish to one of three treatments: a control, an acid group, and an acid/Al group. Treatment will occur in early spring, and will last for a period of 24-72 hours. Sample analysis will include quantification of seawater tolerance, morphological, and functional aspects of gill chloride cells, gill Al, and other physiological parameters.

Using physiological (e.g. respirometric) and biochemical techniques (e.g. energy metabolites, metabolic end-point determination), this research will investigate the physiological and behavioural response to exhaustive exercise in larval/early juvenile Atlantic salmon.

Susan Lund - The utility of heat shock proteins as biomarkers of thermal stress in the Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar)
Year: 2001

The proposed study involves sampling 8-10 Atlantic salmon parr from 2-3 sites on the Miramichi River in the spring (cool water controls) and during a high temperature event in the summer. Samples would be analyzed for growth factors as well as heat shock proteins that may serve as biomarkers of temperature stress.

Marie Clement - Spawning habitat model validation, behavioural interactions and microhabitat utilization of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) in Lake Ontario tributaries
Year: 2000

Behavioural interactions and microhabit utilization of Atlantic salmon juveniles and other salmonids (rainbow trout, brown trout, brook trout, coho salmon and Chinook salmon) will be investigated by underwater observations in the field. The effects of interspecific competition will also be quantified by comparing the growth rate of Atlantic salmon and rainbow trout in the laboratory.

Allen Curry - Assessing and conserving wild stocks of Atlantic salmon from the Inner Bay of Fundy
Year: 2000

The project will assess the relative abundance of Atlantic salmon parr in approximately 10 rivers of the Inner Bay of Fundy. Sizes, growth rates and ages will be examined. A sub-sample of the populations will be held in hatchery facilities for subsequent laboratory studies.

Leif M. Burge - Assessment of side channel habitat and fish community structure, Little Southwest Miramichi River, New Brunswick
Year: 1999

Side channels (bogans) are common in the large rivers in the Maritimes, but their habitat value is not fully documented. This research will document the fish communities and physical habitat characteristics in side channels through three seasons. Processes forming and maintaining side channels will be examined and management recommendations will be made.

Habitat assessment and tagging of salmon in the Rivière St. Jacques. Research on economic aspects of salmon conservation, evaluation of the potential for development.

Brian Kennedy - The bioenergetic causes for and consequences of juvenile Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) movements in Vermont tributaries
Year: 1999

This study will examine the relationship between juvenile Atlantic salmon feeding, growth and movements in Vermont streams. I propose to (1) develop a novel chemical approach for measuring consumption rates and (2) conduct a field experiment with genetically market fry which will allow me to relate the consumption and growth rates of individual salmon to their dispersal history.

Using physiological (e.g. respirometric) and biochemical techniques (e.g. energy metabolites, metabolic end-product determination), this research will investigate the physiological response to exhaustive exercise in different strains of salmon. In addition, the effects of an acute temperature change on this response will be investigated.

Margaret Murphy - Ecology of the early life history of Atlantic salmon
Year: 1999

The effect of Atlantic salmon strain and over-winter survival will be tested with a combination of field and laboratory experiments. Two strains of Atlantic salmon will be stocked in several streams and evaluated in the laboratory to assess possible differences in growth rate, competition and over-winter survival.

Dr. Roger Buckland & Suzanne Mills - Riviere St- Jean Joint Research Project/Summer 1998
Year: 1998

The project in its first year will consolidate all existing information on salmon populations in the Rivière St. Jean and take counts of adult and juvenile populations for 1998. In addition, the awareness of the importance of salmon conservation among local communities will be increased.

Marie Clement - Re-introduction of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) in Lake Ontario
Year: 1998

This study will permit better understanding of the factors preventing the successful reintroduction of native Atlantic salmon into Lake Ontario tributaries. Behavioral interactions and microhabitat utilization of Atlantic salmon juveniles and rainbow trout will be investigated by underwater observations. The strength of interspecific competition will also be quantified by comparing growth rate, diet and physiological stress.

Brendan Galloway - The influence of acclimation temperature on the post-exercise metabolic disturbance in juvenile Atlantic salmon
Year: 1998

Using physiological and biochemical techniques (i.e., energy metabolites, metabolic end-product assays), the goal of this research is to investigate the effect of acclimation temperature on Atlantic salmon recovering from exhaustive exercise.

Michael Stokesbury - Morphometric, meristic and genotypic categorization of introgressive hybridization between juvenile Atlantic salmon, brown trout and their hybrids in Nova Scotian rivers
Year: 1998

In this study, Atlantic salmon, brown trout and their hybrids will be examined using morphometrics, meristic counts and nuclear and mitochondrial DNA analysis. From this information the prevalence of hybridization and introgressive hybridization and the morphological characteristics of the parr of Atlantic salmon, brown trout and their hybrids will be documented.

Dr. Bruce Tufts/Scott Leary - Stress proteins (Hsps) as indicators of cellular stress in salmonids
Year: 1998

The main focus of this project is to develop a better indicator of stress in Atlantic salmon. To this end, a convenient assay will be developed for the measurement of damaged proteins using a ubiquitin antibody for Atlantic salmon and Western blotting techniques.

Marie Clement - Efficiency of electrofishing at its effects on physical injuries in juvenile Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar)
Year: 1996

The efficiency of the removal method to estimate parr abundance in streams will be tested.  Introduced parr will be recaptured by electrofishing in different sites and at different water temperature.  Effects of electrofishing on parr growth rate will be determined by measuring lipid content, length and weight variations in wild parr.

Stephen Gephard - Travel to Spain to study Atlantic salmon stocks
Year: 1996

Travel to northern Spain and study salmon runs of the region, conferring with biologists from Spanish universities and resource agencies, and visiting rivers, hatcheries, fishways and research facilities.  Knowledge will be gained on characteristics of the salmon populations and the local environments they inhabit.

Shawn Good - Coupling of otolith and somatic growth during the early life history of Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar
Year: 1996

The project will attempt to determine the relationship between site characteristics of spawning areas, and specific early life history events such as hatch date, emergence date, and time of first feeding, and determine how these may lead to the occurrence of precocious sexual maturity in Atlantic salmon parr.

Gregory Hammond - Genetic variation within and between "wild" and synthetic populations of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) from New Brunswick
Year: 1996

The project is a necessity in finding out the genetic state of the Magaguadavic and other rivers based on DA fingerprinting and analyses of "wild" samples collected both before and after the onset of the aquaculture industry in New Brunswick.  At issue is whether matings between "wild" and hatchery Atlantic salmon result in hybrids less fit to survive and reproduce in the natural environment than the "wild" fish.

Alfred Gonzalez - An evaluation of the Rainbow Dam fish passage facility for the Connecticut River Atlantic salmon
Year: 1995

Oversee the operation of the fish trap located in the McLean Game Refuge, West Branch Salmon Brook, Granby, Connecticut.  Maintain the trap, capture, sample, tag and release fish; coordinate assignments among recipient, volunteers and CT DEP personnel; assist the CT DEP in monitoring the bypass facility for tagged smolts and perform statistical analyses on the recapture data to calculate bypass efficiency.  Conduct a macro-benthic study on aquatic invertebrates within proximity of fish capture areas.  Compare results with those previously received by the CT DEP.  Create a GIS model and satellite image that will display the vegetative types and land use of the general area.  The Concluding report will contain the overall results, graphs, pictures and images.

Andrew Rossiter - The physiology and survival of Atlantic salmon following exhaustive exercise in soft and acidic water: implications for the catch and release sport fishery
Year: 1995

This project will elucidate the importance of river water quality on the recovery and survival of caught and released Atlantic salmon.  Both field and highly control lab studies will be performed to measure the survival and physiological disturbance in exhaustive exercised salmon acclimated to water of varying Ph and hardness.

J. Stewart Anderson - Digestible Protein and Energy Requirements of Atlantic Salmon in Sea Water
Year: 1994

This project is aimed at determining the optimal dietary ratio of digestible protein to digestible energy for

1) optimizing the economics of rearing Atlantic salmon in ambient temperature seawater, and

2) minimizing organic mater, nitrogen and phosphorus discharge into the environment.

Richard Booth - Effect of catch and release angling on the survival and migratory behaviour of wild
Year: 1994

This study will focus on the contribution of red and white muscle activities during migration and two types of exercise in the wild in wild Atlantic salmon.  Metabolic scope and energy demands during exercise will also be recorded and compared.  Specifically, muscle activity will be measured during sustained swimming and burst swimming.  These measurements will be used to compare in situ measurements of muscle activity during angling and following release.

Gregory Hammond - Heterozygosity in Atlantic salmon: release-return strategies and the maintenance of genetic diversity in New Brunswick
Year: 1994

The project involves the use of the latest in DNA extraction, amplification via PCR, and fingerprinting techniques on blood and scale samples from 15 generations of Atlantic salmon in eight New Brunswick rivers.  The individual genotypes will be determined based on a number of single locus probes designed around microsatellite genomic DNA and the overall state of heterozygosity for each of the populations determined.  Extensive work in the Marine Gene Probe Lab, as well as trips to St. Andrews (ASF), will be involved.

Jonathan Carr - The occurrence of and spawning interactions between wild and aquaculture Atlantic salmon on the Magaguadavic River, N.B.
Year: 1993

Salmon will be captured at the Magaguadavic River fishway and observations recorded, including scale and blood samples taken.  Aquaculture salmon will be identified by: observing morphological characters, scale analysis, blood analysis using recombinant DNA technology, chemical egg analysis to determine if aquaculture fish are spawning.

Gerald Chaddick - Outbreeding depression: fact or fiction?
Year: 1993

Develop computer models that can predict and/or monitor genetic change, in wild fish populations, due to the release of large numbers of captive-bred progeny.

Anne McGeachy - The use of triploid Atlantic salmon in aquaculture
Year: 1993

The goal of this research project is to evaluate the performance of sterile Atlantic salmon throughout the fresh and seawater stages of their life cycle using commercial-scale aquaculture facilities and techniques.  The benefits of using sterile stocks can be seen on both the economical and conservational points of view.

Patrick Wells - Investigation of cutaneous gas exchange in early developmental phases of Atlantic salmon, Salrnso salar (L.)
Year: 1992

Respiration physiology of Atlantic salmon will be studied through early development.  Gill morphology and blood-water diffusion distances of skin and gills will be monitored.  A two chambered respirometer will be used to determine importance of cutaneous respiration.  Effects of hypoxia will be studied.
